Oh Sh*t Word - OSW
I think I have mentioned this once or twice, but I really do not like leashes.
I accept that they are necessary evils, especially for puppies, but in general, my goal is always to get my dog off their leash as fast as possible.
This is why my dogs leave my house in Essex Junction without leashes. They wait in the doorway for their name, then wait on the doorstep for me to go to the car and let them come to me one by one.

Control freak? That is what you must think.
But did you know that cars routinely go above the suggested 25 mph limit by at least 20 mph?
If my dogs were to leave the house like overexcited maniacs and then see a cat or squirrel running across the street - or on the other side - what will happen without a leash?
Most dogs would chase. And I need to know that I can yell my oh sh*t word, and my dogs will react immediately.
Because what if they don't?
They could be dead or severely hurt.
Neither outcome is an option in my book, so my dogs stay on the leash until I know I can trust them to listen to me every time.
I cannot allow them to get hurt, so I ask them to listen, and if they don't, I make sure that I have a structure in place to help me help them.
Happy Training.
