Anyway, I wanted to talk a bit more about training. I find it interesting that many people think teaching a couple of tricks is enough. Sure, after years of helping your dog make better choices, many of those choices become habit, and life gets easier.

But where it becomes unfair is when we add puppies or dogs to our home and expect them to instantly know the rules.

No one can do that—remember college roommates, housemates, partners, or babies and how they didn’t know anything at first?

I’ve spent months—sometimes years—explaining to my dogs what I need them to do to live in my world.

Sometimes I still remind my terrier that listening is required. Emma has full freedoms because she remembers best.

Training should happen all the time, in ways that help your dog make good choices.

So, did you know training never stops?
