Leash Training...Pt.2?

Yesterday, I mentioned setups that I used to teach Rylee to pay attention to me.

Over the last nine years, that leash walking has faded - mainly because of my dislike of leashes.

But Rylee still knows that the leash is not bad. I never used it as a punishment. For me, it's a communication tool - a way to let my dog know I am here, in control and aware of what is happening, even when they are unsure.

As I've grown as a dog trainer and raised four puppies, my approach to leash training has evolved. It is no longer just about "hey watch what I am doing". I combine my mother's alphabet and number setups with my own experiences and what I have learnt from others.

The most important thing about the leash? It let's you communicate so much by doing so little. Your dog feels your emotions - whether you are anxious or calm - and mirrors them back, often fivefold or tenfold. The stronger your relationship with your dog, the stronger that reflection.

So, my first piece of advice? Take a deep breath. Know what you need from your dog.

Then take it one step at a time.

Happy Training!
